
Respiratory Protection: Particulates, Vapors and the Right Cartridge
Masks for particulates, half-face respirators with cartridges for vapors. Choosing the wrong cartridge is worse than wearing nothing, because it gives confidence without protection.
Respiratory protection is the only PPE where choosing wrong can be worse than wearing nothing: a particulate cartridge does not stop an organic vapor, and the worker wears it believing they are protected.
The starting point is what is being breathed. For solid particulates — dust, metal fume, fiber — the reference is a NIOSH-certified N95 mask or better; in Mexico NOM-116-STPS-2009 regulates negative-pressure air-purifying respirators against harmful particulates. For vapor and gas you must go by a specific cartridge against the substance on your safety data sheet.
And there is a requirement that gets forgotten: the seal. A half-face respirator over a beard does not seal, and without a seal the protection is nominal. When the position demands it, that conversation has to happen before buying the equipment, not after the audit.
