Embroidery in Tijuana: What to Ask Before Sending 300 Garments
Ninety percent of the embroidery a customer rejects could have been avoided with a physical sample worth a few pesos.
What digitizing is and why it matters so much
Digitizing is translating the logo into a stitch sequence: order, direction, density and pull compensation. That is where it is decided whether small lettering reads, whether the outline stays clean and whether the fabric puckers. Generic digitizing on stretch fabric produces the wrinkled embroidery everyone has seen.
Demand a physical sample before the lot
A screen does not show density or puckering. A physical sample does. It is the step separating an approved order from 300 pieces that have to be redone, and it costs practically nothing.
How embroidery is priced
By stitch count and by position, plus the initial digitizing paid once per design and size. A logo with gradients and tiny lettering costs more because it carries more stitches, not because the supplier is padding the bill.
File: vector whenever possible
AI, EPS, PDF or SVG. A low-resolution JPG can be used, but the logo has to be redrawn and that is quoted separately. Sending the right file from the start saves days of back and forth.
When screen printing is the better choice
Large areas, large runs and multiple inks: screen printing. Small logo on a daily-wear garment with industrial washing: embroidery. On polo piqué screen printing cracks; on an event tee embroidery raises the price without adding value.
Embroidering on high-visibility garments has rules
You do not embroider over retroreflective tape or in a way that reduces the fluorescent area, because that compromises the garment's class. A supplier who embroiders wherever is convenient leaves you a garment that no longer complies.
